DRESS CODE
Proper dress code is essential to proper dance training. Dancers are expected to wear clothing appropriate to each style, as well as the proper footwear and hair. Dressing appropriately demonstrates discipline and respect for the teacher, fellow students, and the art of dance. Proper dress also allows for safe, efficient movement and proper instruction.
Individual teachers may have requests specific to their own classes. Students will be notified of this during registration. General guidelines for appropriate attire, footwear, and hair are as follows:
Ballet
Black leotard and pink tights. Any style leotard is permitted and tights can be worn on the feet or off (convertible or footless tights are allowed). Dancers age 12 and up may choose to wear a short, black sheer ballet skirt or back dance shorts (snug with no logos or designs). Hair must be secured off the face in a slick bun. Alignment belts are recommended for dancers age 10 and higher. Pink leather or canvas ballet slippers. Please see your instructor before sewing elastics.
Creative Combo Class
Dancewear in any style or color. We recommend a leotard and biker shorts, or a leotard and a skirt. Black mary jane tap shoes and pink ballet slippers. Hair pulled back off the face in a bun, ponytail, pig tails, etc. Students should be able to transition from wearing tights or thin socks with tap shoes to bare feet for creative movement. So, tights are optional. If worn, tights must be footless or convertible (able to be rolled up over the ankle or worn on the foot).
Hip Hop
Clothing must be dance-friendly. Dancers may wear traditional dance wear (leotard & tights with shorts or jazz pants, etc.), or items like sweats and comfortable clothing. No jeans may be worn. In addition, clothing must be free of inappropriate language. Street shoes are permitted as long as the soles are clean and non-marking & that they are worn EXCLUSIVELY for dance class (never worn outdoors... not even to walk out to the car after class).
Jazz
Leotard and tights are required. Any color/style is welcome and tights may be worn on or off the feet. Additional permitted items include bikers, capris, and any snug-fitting top. Hair must be pulled back into a ponytail or bun. Footwear is currently TBD.
Lyrical/Contemporary
Dance-friendly attire, including any combination of the following: leotard, tights, shorts, capris, tank or snug-fitting top. Hair must be secured in a bun or ponytail. Bare feet or foot undeez/dance paws.
Tap
Dance-friendly attire, including any of the following: leotard, tights, snug-fitting top, dance shorts/ skort/ capris/ jazz pants. Hair must be secured in a bun or ponytail. Black oxford tap shoes (check with the staff for specific suggestions).
Failure to adhere to the dress code will result
in in the following consequences:
1st
offense- Student is verbally warned of dress code violation and parents are notified
2nd
offense- Student is verbally warned a second time, and parents are also notified
3rd
offense- Student is not permitted to participate in class and will be asked
to observe. Beyond three offenses, the instructor may choose to remove the
student from class for the remainder of the term.
ATTENDANCE
Students are required to be on time and ready to dance at their scheduled class time. Dance is a learn-by-doing pursuit, and inconsistent attendance/promptness will result in a delay in the student's growth. Late arrivals must receive instructor permission to enter class. Dancers arriving later that 10 minutes will not be allowed to participate in class due to the potential for injury after missing warm-up. Late students will be asked to observe class.
Dancers must notify the studio of any absence from class. Any school-related activity requiring and must be reported at least one week in advance via e-mail or in writing. Sickness can be reported the day of an absence. Please CALL the studio at 419.494.3810 to report an absence due to sickness. Special rules regarding attendance exist for members of The Beat's Competition Company.
In addition to being in class and on time, it is also expected that students of The Beat will be picked up promptly after class. Our studio is located within a public building open to numerous other tenants and clients, and so it is extremely important that dancers not roam the halls or disturb others. The Beat does not offer a babysitting service, and so other non-dancing siblings, friends, etc. are not permitted to be left unsupervised at the studio.
In the event that a student misses class, a makeup class may be scheduled if there is an alternate, comparable class offered. Please check with the owner to see if such a class exists. Makeup classes, when available, are only an option for students who have an excused absence including sickness or a school function such as a choir/band concert or mandatory meeting. Other outside activities including practice for another sport/activity, games, etc. are unexcused and cannot be made up. Tuition is not refunded for missed classes.
